102 Postoperative Haemoglobin Monitoring in Neck of Femur Fracture Patients. Can a Simple Teaching Session Improve Patient Safety on the Orthopaedic Ward?

Abstract Aim Patients who suffer neck of femur fractures (NOF#) are typically frail and at risk postoperative anaemia which can contribute to a high mortality in this demographic. This QiP reviewed how well haemoglobin (Hb) was being monitored on Orthopaedic unit assessed the effectiveness teaching session improve this. A secondary measure compare day 1 3 Hb establish an evidence base for timing monitoring. Method Two cycles (1st loop: 8/3/21–21/3/21, n = 21. 2nd loop:3/7/21–16/7/21, n=15) were performed either side session. Day post-op recorded. Inclusion criteria patients fitted NOF# best practice tariffs. Results Pre-intervention saw 90% have 52% taken, increased 93% 67% post intervention. 81% showed drop between (mean 11 g/dL), with bloods already below reference range. Conclusions We demonstrated that highlighting importance monitoring patient demographic thus safety. Secondly, is possible from therefore should not be relied on. Future work will aim investigate longer-term trend when outpatient performed.
